77：久米権九郎と久米式 -Gon-kuro Kume and the Kume Style-
当ホテルの別館は、久米設計の創立者である久米権九郎によるものです。構想は眞一の弟の山口正造（箱根富士屋ホテル三代目社長）のものだったようです。
Our hotel's Annex was designed by Gon-kuro Kume, the founder of Kume Sekkei. It seems that the original concept was conceived by Shinichi's younger brother, Shozo Yamaguchi (the third president of the Fujiya Hotel in Hakone).
権九郎は、当初化学を学んでいましたが、留学中に関東大震災により兄を亡くします。その後、建築を志し久米式を編み出すことになります。
こうした経緯から、権九郎は人命尊重を最重要事項と考え、建築は頑丈、丈夫であることを旨としていたとのこと。
久米式は、正式には「久米式耐震木構造」と呼ばれ、現代のツーバイフォーのように、細い一定サイズの板材を用いて壁面を構成し、それによって構造体を形づくるもので、籠のような構造になっています。
鳥籠に例えられることもあるようです。
現在、国内で久米式を用いた建築の現存が確認されているのは金谷ホテル別館のほか、軽井沢万平ホテルと神奈川県逗子市の旧本多家住宅の3軒とのことです。
別館は、2023年7月に「別館ROYAL HOUSE」としてリニューアル・オープンいたしましたが、久米式の構造に守られ、そうした当初の“思い”も引き継がれた空間になっております。

Kume initially studied chemistry, but during his time abroad, he lost his elder brother in the Great Kanto Earthquake. Subsequently, he decided to pursue architecture, which led him to devise the "Kume Style." Because of the tragic experience of losing his brother to the earthquake, Kume prioritized the respect for human life above all else, making sturdiness and robustness the guiding principles of his architecture. The Kume Style is formally known as the "Kume-Style Earthquake-Resistant Timber Structure." Similar to modern two-by-four construction, it uses thin wooden boards of a uniform size to form wall surfaces, thereby creating a structural body that resembles a basket-like structure. It is sometimes likened to a birdcage. Currently, only three existing buildings in Japan are confirmed to utilize the Kume Style: the Kanaya Hotel Annex, the Karuizawa Manpei Hotel, and the former Honke Residence in Zushi, Kanagawa Prefecture.
The Annex was completely renovated and reopened in July 2023 as the "ANNEX ROYAL HOUSE." Protected by the Kume Style structure, it remains a space that inherits those original founding "wishes" and dedication to safety.
