79：お庭のお地蔵様　　-The Jizo Statue in the Garden-

別館の西側にお地蔵様がいらっしゃいます。
西を向いて、特に春やこの季節の天気の良い日には、気持ちよさそうに西日を浴びています。
A Jizo statue is situated on the west side of our Annex. Facing west, the statue appears to be comfortably basking in the setting sun, especially on fine days in spring and this current season.


明治35年の台風（足尾台風）によって、日光では大谷川流域で大きな洪水被害が出ました。
西町（にしまち）にある名勝「憾満ヶ淵（かんまんがふち。地元ではガンマンガフチやガンマンと呼ぶことも。）」の化け地蔵（並び地蔵）も流されています。
当ホテルのお地蔵様の大きさやお顔も、この並び地蔵に“なんとなく”似て見えなくもありません。
もしかしたら、この時の台風被害と関係があるの…かもしれません。

いずれにしましても、今日も穏やかなお顔で座っておられます。

In 1902 (Meiji 35), a massive flood, known as the Ashio Typhoon, caused extensive damage along the Daiyagawa River basin in Nikko. The Bake Jizo (Ghost Jizo) statues—a long row of numerous Jizo figures—at the scenic spot of Kanmangafuchi Abyss in Nishimachi (known locally as Ganmangafuchi or Ganman) were also swept away by the flood. The size and face of the Jizo statue at our hotel bear a "certain resemblance" to those in the row of Jizo at the abyss. It is possible that our statue might have some connection to the damage caused by that typhoon... we can only speculate.

In any case, the Jizo sits there today with an entirely peaceful expression. We invite you to visit the statue during a stroll when you stay with us.
